How do I install mods?

I searched around as much as I could but I couldn't find the instructions for this part of putting in mods. I downloaded a mod last night and I think I did it wrong because when I started my game, nothing appears to have changed. None of the new dinosaur skins, or the park buildings in the mod pack I downloaded are available. I'm sure I downloaded the mod pack wrong at this point but I would like to know how and where I have to put the files for these mods so I don't make the same mistake again.
