Meet Ardi, your 4.4m year old mum
Meet Ardi, your 4.4m year old mum
IF you've got a thing for older women, meet Ardi.
She's only 1.2m (4ft), weighs just under 50kg (110 pounds) and is somewhat hirsute. Oh, and she's 4.4million years old.
Ardi roamed forests in what is now Ethiopia 1million years before Lucy, previously the earliest skeleton of a human ancestor to have been discovered.
'This older skeleton reverses the common wisdom of human evolution,' said anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy.
Rather than humans evolving from an ancient chimp-like creature, the new find provides evidence that chimps and humans evolved from some common ancestor but each evolved and changed separately along the way.
'This is not that common ancestor but it's the closest we have ever been able to come,' said evolutionary biologist Prof Tim White.
The lines that evolved into modern humans and living apes probably shared an ancestor 6million to 7million years ago.
Ardi's bones were first discovered in 1994. Extensive study since then indicates the species lived in the woodlands and could climb on all fours along tree branches, but the development of her arms and legs indicates she did not spend much time in the trees. She could walk upright on two legs when on the ground.
Formally dubbed Ardipithecus ramidus, which means root of the ground ape, Ardi's find is detailed in this week's edition of Science.

I thought I read somewhere that you beleived in it.
Anyhoo, I believe in evolution. I just don't believe we have all the details and breakdown fully understood. But that's just my correct Opinion.

Re: Meet Ardi, your 4.4m year old mum
Given that it is 4.4 million years old and African, I find this similarity to be 'coincidence'Raging Raptor wrote:Doesn't that picture look similar to Sasquatch/Bigfoot?
The dinosaur in your sig is naked. And isn't that pic a little well ya know cause it says it is a woman so I think it is a little rudebecause well look it is nacade!!!
Evolutionary theory has saved lives. Hundreds, nay, thousands of lives.Yes it does I have to say evolotion is fake and a stupit thing to believe!!!
Explain, reasonably, your objection or shut up. It's this sort of attitude that got us stuck in the dark ages.

It is an ape.
Not within the homo genus yet so nowhere near a person.

Re: Meet Ardi, your 4.4m year old mum
True. Nova should change the topic title a little, since it is almost impossible to focus on the main point without drifting off the the argument of evolution.

I did just PM allo to reopen the old evolution topic so we can merge the evo stuff with that and keep the discussion on topic.

Precisely. Funny, my friends ALL believe in evolution, yet, where surprised when I told them I was atheist.

Stephen Roberts wrote:“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Re: Meet Ardi, your 4.4m year old mum
I find it amusing that 'scientists' find fragments of bones and then have an artist draw out what they think it looked like. Take Nebraska Man for example. Someone found a tooth and built an entirely new creature from that. Unfortunately, it was later shown to be a pig tooth
Too many assumptions...
